Spring Cleaning Strategy
Spring has arrived and along with it the sights and sounds of flowers blooming, birds singing and bees buzzing. It’s also the time of year that we begin to think about our spring cleaning strategy and get a start on itl. There’s just something about spring time weather that makes you want to get this job accomplished and then raise those wonderfully clean windows to hear the sounds of spring come forth. The following are some handy spring cleaning tips that will help you get started on the right track for your cleaning.
Let’s get ready to organize. I find that during the winter months I hibernate around the house. Like a bear during winter I let things go in my housework way too much and the house becomes cluttered. Reading is a favorite pastime and when I look around my house I have way too many books and magazines out of place. Also I find DVDS and CDS needing to find their way back to their places of honor.
Starting Point
- Take a walk through of your house and notice all the items that have lost their way home and are now cluttering your house.
- The start to well organized spring cleaning begins with “putting all of your items” back where they belong. De-cluttering is something we all hate to do but becomes necessary for us.
- Go through your cabinets, shelving, counter tops and drawers to find things that you no longer need or use. By doing this you will free up a lot of used space and remove clutter. Now you will have more storage space for things like your medicines and small items.
- Everyone dreads cleaning their closets and wardrobes so think about treating yourself after wards.
Ask yourself a few questions!
- While you are packing away your winter clothes ask yourself a few questions:
- Did you wear it this winter?
- Does it still fit? If you didn’t wear it this winter chances are great that next winter you won’t either.
- Place it into the giveaway pile or a toss out pile.
I know we all say that we will hang on to something that doesn’t fit because we all think someday we will lose the weight to wear it. If this is the case only choose one item to keep, dispose of the others. Treat yourself to the idea that when you do lose the weight you will splurge and buy yourself one new outfit or even several. However if you don’t make room for them now by removing the old you will not have room for the new.
- Do the same thing for your husband’s as well as your children’s closets.
- Children grow so fast that it takes no time at all for everything in their closet to be too small.
- Set these clothing items aside for giveaway to organizations so that other children can use them.
Take a quick walk through of your home
- Really look at all the knick knacks and keepsakes scattered around.
- Do you really like dusting these items every week?
Do they mean that much to you? I know we all have things we cannot bear to part with and if this is the case then pack them away into a clear storage bin for safekeeping. By packing up a lot of the little things we have more time for doing other things we enjoy more than dusting. I know I always find this to be the case. Just leave out the things that you really enjoy or that fits into your decor.
Clean out your storage Areas
This one might sound a little crazy but take time to clean out your storage areas once a year.
- This is best done during your normal spring cleaning.
- If you store things in your basement, attic or garage this will possibly clear up enough room to turn your basement into an oasis for your children to make a playroom or into a family room.
- Not to mention if your garage is so over packed with storage items that you cannot park your car in there anymore.
- Go through your storage and if you haven’t needed a particular item(s) in a year toss it aside. Put it into the giveaway pile and move on. Unless it of course is a special item or keepsake and then leave it stored.
Now step back and look at all you’ve accomplished so far. You’ve just taken the first steps to an organized spring cleaning venture. By eliminating this much clutter you can reward yourself with one object you desire to bring into your home now. Remember if you purchase anything new ask yourself beforehand “what can I remove before bringing this new item home?” That way you do not start acquiring new clutter all the time.
