How To Clean Upholstery
The reason people purchase new furniture is because they fall in love with it. Why do they fall in love with it? Most often it’s the way it looks, the design, the fabric and the upholstery. Shopping and purchasing furniture does not come cheap. Naturally you want it to last a very long time so that you do not have this expense again for some years. Of course this means you want to take care of it in order to keep it looking as new as the day you’re brought it home.
Vacuuming your furniture
When doing your regular household cleaning that’s the time to care for your upholstered furniture. Each time you vacuum make it a habit to vacuum your furniture as well. Vacuuming your furniture removes all dust and surface soil which prevents the dust from becoming embedded into the upholstery.
Turn over the cushions
It’s also a good idea to turn over your cushions while vacuuming as well. By turning them over you can extend the life of your furniture.
- This will allow even distribution of wear and tear plus it will keep your cushions from developing indentations.
- It also helps to fluff the cushions to keep them in shape.
- Many people find it helpful as well to rearrange and redistribute the cushions around on the sofa or love seat. This was no particular cushion shows more wear than another.
Protect your furniture from the Sun
- You will also want to keep your furniture protected from the sun.
- Sunlight can damage your upholstery and often times bleach the color out and fade it.
If you can’t place your furniture away from direct sunlight you might consider keeping your curtains or blinds closed during the day if directly shining into the room.
Good ventilation
Fumes from cooking and pollutants such as smoke can also harm your upholstered furniture. Proper ventilation can cut back on some of the fumes so if you don’t have your kitchen vented you may want to invest in a vent hood.
Prevention
With anything you want to keep clean prevention is the best way to accomplish this.To avoid stains and spills on your furniture set rules with your family members to avoid this from happening.
- Do not allow anyone, especially children, to snack or eat on your furniture. This is just asking for a spill or a piece of food to drop and cause a stain.
- Do not allow shoes on your furniture either. Make a rule with the family that shoes are to be taken off at the door upon entry. Shoes on the furniture can cause dirt to become embedded into the fibers. This makes it more difficult to clean.
If you are a pet owner and not already doing so, teach my pets to stay off the furniture as well. Pet hair and pet dander is a nuisance to remove. This requires more vacuuming and also the use of a lint brush to remove the pet hair.
Fabric Protector
Never underestimate the benefits of fabric protector.
- If your upholstery is protected by a scotch guard then stains are easily removed. If you do not have a fabric protector then remember to act quickly if there is a liquid spill.
- Dab up as much of the liquid as possible with a clean dry towel or rag. Remember to never rub because this can cause even more damage.
Spot Remover
- If using a spot remover meant for upholstery make sure you’ve read all the manufacturer’s instructions first.
- Always test this on a discreet area to make sure it doesn’t harm or bleach your fabric.Apply with a soft brush and gently work the spot remover in a circular motion. Then you simply vacuum when it’s dry.
If you take care of your furniture by following these recommendations then you shouldn’t have to hire a professional cleaner near as often!
